Crafted with Intention: The Story Behind August Moon Rise

We’re thrilled to highlight one of our favourite guest makers, Andrea from August Moon Rise, whose handcrafted candles bring warmth and intention into every space. As an interior designer, I’m always looking for pieces that do more than just look good—and Andrea’s creations deliver. Each candle is thoughtfully poured in small batches using natural ingredients and subtle, layered scents that elevate any room they’re placed in.

Owner of August Moon Rise - Andrea Campbell

1) Can you tell us a bit about your business and what led you to create it?

August Moon Rise is a seasonal scent studio built on the idea that fragrance can be more than a backdrop — it can be a ritual. I spent over 20 years as a Recreation Therapist, helping people create rhythms that support their wellbeing. Candles started as my own creative outlet, a way of blending memory, presence, and design. Over time, it became clear that what I was making wasn’t just “candles” — it was a way for people to carve out small, intentional moments in their day.

2) What were some of the biggest lessons along the way?

That growth doesn’t come from convenience or ease — it comes from patience, alignment, and staying grounded in your own values. I’ve learned not to apologize for pricing that reflects the craft, and to hold old stock with dignity. I’ve also learned that sometimes “less” — less products, less noise, less clutter — actually creates more resonance.

3) What is the best and most challenging part of being an entrepreneur?

The best part is creating something that feels true — when a customer tells me a candle became part of their Sunday ritual, that’s everything. The challenge is holding the balance between vision and logistics — protecting creativity while managing production, markets, and the realities of running a business.

4) Why do you think collaboration between creative businesses is so powerful?

I first met Victoria at the Empowered Business Forum last year. Each room at the event was staged by a different designer, and hers was my favourite. I remember thinking how lucky I’d be to step into her world going forward — and now I get to.

Working with Moffatt Grace Design has reminded me that creativity doesn’t exist in isolation — it’s meant to be shared.

5) Looking back, is there a piece of advice you wish you had when you started your business?

To trust that slow growth is still growth. It’s easy to get caught in comparison or to chase trends. But the businesses that last are built on intention, not urgency. I wish I had been gentler with myself in those early years, and trusted the seasons of growth and rest.

6) How do we find your products?

The collection of August Moon Rise candles being sold through Moffatt Grace Home Collection can be found here. The full collection can be found on my website. Everything is crafted in small batches here in Ontario. You can also explore seasonal markets and stockist partners along with collaborations like this one on my website.
