Can you tell us a bit about your business and what led you to create it?
Hatfield Design + Co was born from my lifelong love of products and design — creating pieces that not only look beautiful but elevate everyday living. Over the years, I noticed a gap in the market for high-quality, stylish, and affordable rugs that could stand up to real life. I wanted to bridge that gap by developing rugs that combine timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship all while keeping sustainability at the heart of the process. Each piece is made from 100% recycled materials and designed to bring warmth and texture to a space.
What were some of the biggest lessons along the way?
One of the biggest lessons has been finding a reliable manufacturer that you can truly build a strong, long-term relationship with. It’s critical to understand the manufacturing process and exactly where and how products are being made. Luckily, with my background, I was able to partner with a factory that aligned with my standards and values.
What is the best and most challenging part of being an entrepreneur?
Best part: You get to build something that reflects your values and vision — in this case making beautiful design that is durable, accessible and sustainable.
Challenging part: The weight of responsibility falls on you — from product quality, to supply chain, to customer satisfaction, to staying financially sustainable.
Why do you think collaboration between creative businesses is important?
Collaborating with other designers and brands brings fresh ideas and more visibility. Plus, working with other creative businesses is inspiring — you feed off each other’s energy and often create something more meaningful than you could alone.
What would you say now to someone thinking about launching their own business?
Go for it — if you have a vision you can commit to, and you’re prepared to do both the creative and the business side of things, startup life can be incredibly rewarding. Be ready for ups and downs — perseverance wins. And surround yourself with people (mentors, collaborators, suppliers) who share your standards and are aligned with your vision.
