Blooming Creativity: Meet Florist Hilary Boekhoven of Dolci Fiori
We’re delighted to feature Hilary Boekhoven, owner of Dolci Fiori, a talented London, Ontario florist we recently collaborated with. Hilary is known for her warm approach and an eye for creating beautiful florals that elevate every project. In our Q&A, she shares her journey as a local entrepreneur and what inspires her work in the floral world.
Can you tell us a bit about your business?
Dolci Fiori Florist is a luxury wedding and event florist operating out of a home studio in Thorndale, Ontario. I began my business with offering daily bouquets, sympathy arrangements, seasonal work and weddings. After my wedding in May, I shifted solely into weddings and events. What lead me to create Dolci Fiori was my love for flowers but also my belief that all women should have fresh cut flowers in the home.
What were some of the biggest lessons along the way?
Being home based, without a store front and foot traffic, it brought challenges on how to manage inventory when providing a fresh product while advertising and getting my name out there.
Ultimately, this was the deciding factor to switch to weddings and events as it gave me more control over my inventory and ensure quality and freshness for each customer.
What is the best and most challenging part of being an entrepreneur?
Best Part: Schedule Flexibility – it has allowed me more time to spend with my friends and family.
Challenging Part: Being home based and an entrepreneur, it can be lonely. You’re not consistently surrounded by people, and need to push through the feeling of isolation to stay motivated.
Why do you think collaboration between creative businesses is so powerful?
Collaborating with other women has helped me get out of ruts and a stale thought processes. I also find it energizing to be around other motivated women in their fields.
What would you say now to someone thinking about launching their own biz?
Do not expect things to happen overnight, it takes time, energy, and persistence to build out a business. Believe in yourself and your passion for your business and it will work out!
