Meet Local Artist - Lori Dedato

How did you first get into painting? Was there a moment when you knew it was your thing?

As a young girl, watching my dad in the construction business, I was obsessed with every aspect of the industry. From blue prints to the design and styling of spaces. My interest in art was a natural part of that for me. Although my formal training is in design, I took a few art related classes. If I couldn’t find a piece with the right aesthetic or price, sometimes I would paint a piece for myself, friends and clients.

Walk us through your process - how do your ideas come to life?

There was a very long period of time that I didn’t paint at all. Fast forward to COVID times. Like many, I was looking to fill my time (sourdough wasn’t my thing). So I ordered some paint supplies and started creating. Something about it felt right to me, it felt like where I needed to be in the stage of life I was in. I was creating so many pieces that I started giving them away to friends and family. The response was pretty unanimous from the people around me that I should put my work out there and try to sell them. With their encouragement, I started posting on Instagram and from there, Lori Dedato Collection was born.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration mainly comes from nature. I’m constantly taking pictures on my walks and at the family cottage in Port Franks. I once took a screen shot of one of Shea McGee’s stories on Instagram. She posted a story of a beautiful flower field and I knew I needed to paint it. It’s called “Wildflower Dreams” in my collection.

Victoria and Lori

Why is collaborating with Moffatt Grace Design so important?

First and for most, Victoria always makes it clear there is room at the table for everyone. Her commitment to help other small businesses thrive is amazing. She always features other small local business owners and their products.

I also admire her dedication in offering the best client experience in her own business and I know she puts her heart and soul into every stage and design project.

What’s your preferred medium to work with?

My preferred medium is acrylic. I think it’s the most forgiving medium and layers beautifully. My earlier paintings were all abstract work and on larger canvases. During the COVID days, I was painting smaller pieces and really enjoyed seeing a landscape I had envisioned come to life. So at this point, 5% of my work is abstract and the rest is nature inspired.

Tell us more about your process as an artist.

I have found the more I paint, the more risks I’m taking with the complexity and variety of my art work. My imposter syndrome has completely vanished. Not because I think everything I create is a master piece but because I’m enjoying this new stage of my life so much, I really don’t take it personally if a new release doesn’t sell. I just know I had fun creating it.
